America. Hmm.

Well, I figure there's something to be said for defining America by the good ol' 20th c Open Gate Theory: when you open the gate, people come *in.* And even when GWB won a second term, precious few Americans *actually* left for Canada or Europe as they threatened to.

Which means however bad we might sometimes think it is here ... it's probably not so bad.

As for a positive definition ... America exists on too many levels. I suppose "a nation--being a body of laws and ideas generally accepted as a common ground by a body of people, which laws and ideas are still predicated deeply upon the historical material surplus perceived by earlier members of the nation, and upon European cultural assumptions brought by colonists and often established with violence."
