He Forgot To Tap Out

NJ Robber Dies After Trying to Steal Phone from Former HS Wrestler
Ha! Take that, motherfucker.

No, I'm not endorsing the death penalty, though it is a good thing that the Lifestyle Criminal Community is minus a member.

If he killed the dude, he wasn't doing anything he learned on the wrestling team. Those moves will only do you any good in a real fight if you manage to get the other person on the ground first, and they don't think to punch, kick, or gouge your eyes.

but wrsetling techniques i think would be a good basis to build from.

Pretty sure that most high school wrestlers aren't going against someone they've got reason to expect to cause them dire bodily harm.

I'd guess he used some of the stuff from HS, and the rest was basic "oh crud! I don't wanna die! I just didn't want you to steal my stuff!" moves

One of the men lunged to get the phone back and Davis put him in a headlock, according to sources. Then, sources say the other man, a former high school wrestler, pulled Davis off his friend and put the would-be robber in a headlock.

Yeah, that's not "killed over a phone." That's "killed after assault."

If the Marines are taught a "headlock" that cuts off blood to the head, I suspect any thug on the street can learn it-- sounds more like "assault after robbery results in thief's death."

i've learned it. its pretty easy.

Honestly, I haven't bothered to because anybody I could use it against would've been killed with the not insanely stupid counter-measures...and if I'm in a situation where I could use it, I'm probably going to use the mechanical pencil in my pocket on their eyes instead. (Nasty to think of, but I can't think of any situation where someone of my condition would be in such a position without deadly force being reasonable. Yes, the Marine that demonstrated it was only an inch taller than me. And Wolverine, classically, is my height. Neither of them are snuggly house wives.)

Gino, I think your response got caught in spam filter, somehow.

Yeah, maybe. You definitely learn how to control another person's body (it's all about immobilizing the hips, while not letting them do that to you.) It's been 20(!) years since I wrestled, and I've managed to stay out of fights the entire time, so who knows. The closest I came was just a couple of years ago, and I found myself putting my strong foot back, making my body as small a target as I could, dropping my center of gravity...and not really thinking about any of it until after the fact. So, yeah.

But I'm pretty sure I'd get my ass kicked by someone who had actually learned how to fight, rather than engage in a highly constrained form of ritualized combat.

I guess I find the article to be smacking of "this guy was a trained fighter", and I just don't think that's the case.

FF: dont know where my comment went.

Brian: yeah, i get ya. its wasnt his wrestling that caused the death.

Brian: rereading your comment... i think you were in good shape to at least pull a draw.
if can control his body, and then deliver strikes accordngly, you'd be one up on the average street guy.
delivering strikes would be the point score, but controlling his position would be the key to victory.
i never learned to wrestle. it was one of those things i was going to do, but my HS didnt offer that sport(private school, limited resources, dedicated to college prep), or i would been in it.
my son did, though. he said wrestling helped tremondously on the gridiron, and off ;).
(at 6'2" and 268lbs he fought a lot... as a duty to protect weaker kids... no seriously. he always was that way.)

In any case, I'm glad I didn't have to find out.

I remember back in my wrestling days (over 25 years back) being taught about the difference between the half and full nelson--the latter being illegal because it could break a man's neck.

This wasn't learned in wrestling, but rather probably from a bouncer. One arm goes in front of the throat, the other behind the head, the throat hand holding the head forearm. Squeeze.

Do it right to a healthy person, and they'll be unconscious in five seconds or so. If the person has occlusion of the carotids, it can also trigger stoppage of the heart. So our perp could have died of asphyxiation or cardiac arrest.

And I always love it when a story has a happy ending.
