Someone somewhere pointed out recently that there really is no "Catholic vote"; i.e., that voting patterns among Catholics really mirror those of the population at large. So there's only so much specific pandering that's worth doing, I guess.

And this would not be a good way to pander to evangelicals, I suppose. Do any mainline Protestants do the ash thing? I have no idea...

mainlines, yes. methodist, lutheran, anglican, presbyterian.

baptist/evengelical and charismatics do not.

as for catholic vote, yeah, there really isnt one.

I'd argue there's two. Catholics who attend Mass regularly are, in the main, more conservative than Catholics who don't.

yeah, practicing catholics tend to be more right wing, but a lot of them also belong to unions and vote their paycheck.

growing up, our croation neighbors were very intense catholics. even sent a son to the preisthood. they were democrats, and still are (we KIT). the most catholic family i ever known.

funny, they were appaled at the accusations of clarence thomas, just appalled... but the kennedy's are a heroic family.
