“Make no mistake, tax cheaters cheat us all, and the IRS should enforce our laws to the letter. ” Sen. Tom Daschle, Congressional Record, May 7, 1998, p. S4507.

That is, unless they become part of the Obama administration.

Remember when Republicans were for reforming the tax code?

(Yeah, me neither, but I heard stories about it when I was a boy... )

Anyway, between whassisname at Treasury and my likely soon-to-be new boss Mr. Daschle, I really think would-be tax reformers have been given a golden opportunity to point out that even the people who help write and/or are responsible for enforcing the tax code can't get their taxes right. So maybe it could be a bit streamlined, no?

I'd much prefer that to utterly pointless and predictable partisan "gotcha" bullshit.

(Insert disclaimers that if the parties were reversed, it'd be the Dems bitching about the Rep nominees...etc.)

I haven't seen anything that indicates that Daschle *cheated* on his taxes maliciously, but rather that he fucked them up, and paid the back taxes with interest and penalties.

I am perhaps inclined to believe this because I fucked up my taxes a few years back, and it cost me (what was to me at the time, since I was a grad student) a non-trivial sum of money.

Brian, I'm less inclined than you to think that Daschle screwed up by mistake. But that's just because I have absolutely no respect for how he acted as Senate majority leader. He's a weasel, pure and simple.

But you are right, the tax code should be simplified! How about 10% all around?

daschle, as i've gotten the story.... maybe he goofed, maybe not. but he still isnt paying the penalties along with the interest the rest of us get nailed with.

and the Treas Sec? straight out tax fraud. no two way about it.
but your presidential pick still stood by his crook. whats that tell ya.
its tell me the "us vs them" system will not only continue, but they are too far beyond even pretending otherwise.

i dont play partisan gotcha. but i will point out idealogical hypocrisy. I am rather conservative, but maybe you forgot that i am ,by intent, not a republican.

Gino..didn't mean *you* were playing partisan gotcha...sorry that wasn't clear. I was talking about the discussion more generally, i.e., the talking head and political classes. Not us plebs.

W.B.--If 10% is good enough for Jesus...

in that case, partisan gotcha may be the only way of keeping 'em honest, provided the gotcha was played equally hard on both sides.

you need a media for that though, huh? and a public that gave a damn.
