Is This What Higher Education Has Come To?

The University of Minnesota - Twin Cities (UMTC) is set to hold an event this spring designed to help its female undergraduate students achieve more and greater orgasms.

Maybe there will be a workshop for extra credit.

Hm, interesting...

The actual course description sounds like important stuff for college-age women! The sex educator website goes into every greater detail, and it all sounds like very good discussions for young people, honestly.

Maybe very good discussion for young (married) people, but as a taxpayer, call me unimpressed. One would think that students in search of the big O could dig into those 500 new positions Cosmo advertises every month and either (a) obtain what they want or (b) end up needing to go to a chiropractor.

My money is on (b) and (c) unemployment for students who spend their time this way.

How many credits is the lab?

Pffft. Despite the millions of copies of Cosmo mags sold every year, the majority of women do not have an orgasm every time they have sex, and there is a sadly high number of women who NEVER have orgasms during sex. Ever. Yes, I get that Bike Bubba is partly joking. I just think it's easy for men to laugh at this and call frivolous, because they don't have to worry about it. Can you imagine NEVER having an orgasm during sex? Never? Seriously? Think about it.

Also, I've read studies linking women who are more sexually empowered to being more confident and successful in other areas of their lives. For example, there was one about how women who ask for oral sex (on *themselves*) are more likely to make more money in their careers.

The big O important to men and women? Absolutely. I simply don't believe that the U needs to be spending taxpayer money to fund a seminar on the issue when so many people are willing to offer the advice for basically free.

I'm all in favor of spending tax payer money if it will encourage women to pursue orgasms. Sometimes Bubba is just a crabby old man in a baggy sweater.

:)

There are a lot of resources out there for people, about this stuff. I can't explain why paying $3000 for a group to come hold a seminar about it is more effective than promoting these other resources, but obviously I'm not against it.

Brian said...

Yes, god forbid that the U plunk down the equivalent of what--4 or 5 students' registration fees for the semester?--to give a seminar that could maybe help half the student body derive a little more enjoyment out the years in which they are more or less stuck dating young dudes who watch too much porn and haven't figured out yet that it isn't real.

Bike Bubba said...

Lessee; to counter some of the effects of university sanctioned classes on pornography in the English department and ethnic and gender studies, they're holding a seminar to help ladies cope with the pantywaists they're hooking up with. Did I get that right?

And we wonder why 1/6th of student loans are in default, and why the graduation rate of the U. is a pathetic 56%.

Gino said...

i thought women always had orgasms. it must be just mine, then. :)

Brian said...

I'm pretty sure guys are watching porn without the assistance of any university.

Gino said...

maybe they need to be reading Cosmo, instead.
hey, guys! it's like the other team's playbook.

I thought this was why universities had fraternities and sororities? Can our young no longer discover their own sexuality without academic coaching? Or is it the universities view that it must be done in conformance with University policies?

Bike Bubba said...

Brian; yes, they're into porn (and each other for that matter) without assistance from the U, but where is the first place that they've had unfiltered internet (at least if their parents are smart) and a porn viewing area where Mom and Dad are not likely to come in.

Nice way to introduce some compulsive behaviors that get in the way of calculus and such.

*Hangs Head In Shame*

On behalf of Minnesota: Sorry about this.

Gino said...

but yer a feminist.. you love the Big O, right?

RW said...

I don't know... the way Bubba says "cal-cu-lus..." Gives me a boner.

Hey, I may be the only human he's helped to an orgasm in the last five years!

K-Rod said...

Ah yes, calculus, my favorite equation is:

The integral of e to the x equalls a function of u to the n

Good thing you're wearing that baggy sweater, RW. Wash it now, or you'll be even crabbier soon.

I saw a sculpture identical to the one in the photo in Italy last fall. It's perched on the side of a mountain in Tuscany near the city of Volterra but with nothing around it (this photo here can't be the same O, though, based on the background). You're just driving and you come around a tight curve and, "O!". It was a fun surprise, but I'm glad I wasn't paying for it.

A lot of people get screwed by the U of M.

I can't speak for anyone else, but me? Not so much.

Gino said...

hmmm... you could always take that class.

W.B. Picklesworth said...

What is the purpose of a university education? Is it actually about personal fulfillment? If so, then any controversy over this class is just another fight over public morality.

But if the purpose of university education isn't personal fulfillment, but the pursuit of knowledge, then this is just another distraction, a kind of child care for young adults.

RW said...

I'm thinking we should be thankful that people who go by names like RW, Bike Bubba, and W.B. Picklesworth have little to no chance of ever influencing the policies of colleges and universities.

We already know there's a loud and crabby minority of old white guys who hate intellectual curiosity in any form. We should consider ourselves lucky we're all too stupid to ever find ourselves with the power to determine what is an education and what isn't.

W.B. Picklesworth said...

RW, what's the difference between a tech school, a liberal arts college and a university? Are there meaningful distinctions? Do they serve different purposes? Show me your curiosity.

(For the record, I don't have particular definitions in mind. I'm actually curious what you and other people might say.)

Gino said...

FWIW: your host (that be me) is probably the only man (or woman, if yer name is Amanda) on this thread who lacks a higher education...

so what do i know?

Mr. D said...

so what do i know?

More than all of us combined, sometimes.

VLW said...

I am an egalitarian, actually. As much as I like the big O, I'd rather not use my tax dollars to give other women the big O. It's like prostitution without me having any fun or any say in the matter.

Bike Bubba said...

Hear, hear, Vanessa!

RW, since when do tax funded seminars of this type qualify as "intellectual curiousity"?

W.B. Picklesworth said...

Perhaps he's less interested in curiosity than invective.

RW said...

I'm more interested in orgasms than tax dollars.

Gino said...

ok, thats enough here... please.

RW said...

But... but... I got this joke about something other than a tongue-in-your-cheek. Awwww man...

:-)

Gino said...

let's talk about The American Sniper now, and how badass he was , or was not.

did you like his book?
why not?
ya know... new shit.

For the record, WB and I have a great way of dealing with the shenanigans at our alma materiae: envision this:

Alumni Association caller: Hello, I'm Jane from the University of ....., can we count on your donation today?

Me or WB: As long as the school is funding seminars like...., the answer is "no."

For the record, in America a university is a college that has been certified to offer graduate degrees, whether liberal or more practical.

A liberal arts college cannot offer any practical degrees (Business, Accounting, etc.), but only purely pursuit-of-intellectual-growth degrees (at my college, English Lit, super-high-end Biology, Politics, Economics, and Theatre all qualified, and the college was careful to offer only B.A.s and not B.S.s in a couple of those so it wouldn't lose it's "liberal arts college" qualifications).

Those are both official delineations, as far as I was told 20 years ago (my college was picky about explaining itself).

A tech, or trade, school probably has similar do's and don't's, but I don't know the official set. Maybe they need a few clear ones, to cut out some of the most egregious fly-by-nights : P.
