One thing that cut back on it a little was to go back and disable comments on years-old posts that the spam bots somehow singled out. No real people comment on years old posts anyway.
That still leaves about half the spam comments on current posts. I've just been checking and clearing them every morning and evening. It does get old.

Or moderation, which is a pain but spares people thecaptcha thing.

It's amazing how they keep coming back to individual posts -- there's one post from 2007 that has something like 900 spam comments on it.
It caused me to reset about three months ago.
